What we actually see in Cammeray

Cammeray is quieter than its harbourside neighbours — more freestanding houses and low-rise strata than high-density towers, on leafy streets running out toward Cammeray Park and the golf course.

A good share of the housing here is 1930s–60s brick, so we see the same pattern as the established North Shore suburbs: original switchboards with no safety switches, and downlight retrofits from the 2000s pushed into ceilings without proper insulation clearance.

It's also a suburb where we do a lot of straightforward EV charger and power circuit upgrades for owner-occupier houses — simpler jobs than the strata approvals needed a few suburbs over in Neutral Bay or Crows Nest, though supply capacity still needs checking first.

Cammeray questions

Our Cammeray house still has the original switchboard — does it need replacing?

Not necessarily illegal to keep, but if it's ceramic fuses or an early breaker board with no RCDs, you have no safety switch protection at all. Any new or altered circuit now has to be RCD protected, so in practice most upgrades trigger a full board replacement.

Is installing an EV charger straightforward for a Cammeray house?

Usually more straightforward than an apartment — no strata approval needed — but we still check the switchboard and supply capacity first. Expect $1,200–$2,500 for a standard single-phase home charger, as a guide.

Our downlights were installed years ago — could they be a fire risk?

Possibly, if halogen downlights were fitted into an insulated ceiling without the correct clearance, which was common in 2000s retrofits. Converting to IC-4 rated LED fittings fixes both the heat risk and the running cost.

Why does my safety switch keep tripping with nothing plugged in?

Usually a fault in the fixed wiring, or an appliance still drawing current while switched off — old fridges, pumps and hot water systems are common culprits. We isolate circuits to find the cause.
