Dishwasher installation and connection
Half electrical, half plumbing. Here's which half is which, so you're not paying two trades to stand around.
The electrical / plumbing split
A dishwasher needs three connections: power, water in, and waste out. Only the first is ours.
Electrical. Most domestic dishwashers plug into a standard outlet — but that outlet has to exist, be accessible, and be on a circuit that can take it. In many older Hills kitchens the nearest outlet is behind the adjoining cupboard, or there isn't one at all because the kitchen predates dishwashers being standard. Adding one is straightforward while the cabinetry is out and awkward afterwards.
Plumbing. Water supply and waste connection are a plumber's work. If your kitchen has never had a dishwasher, you need both trades — us for the outlet, a plumber for the tap and waste.
If you're replacing an existing dishwasher and everything is already there, often neither trade is needed. It's worth checking before booking anyone.

How much does dishwasher installation cost?
$150–$280 to connect to an existing suitable outlet. $220–$400 if a new outlet is needed, or $450–$800 where the kitchen circuit is already loaded and a new circuit is required. Plumbing is separate.
Do I need an electrician and a plumber?
For a first-time installation in a kitchen that's never had one, yes — we do the outlet, a plumber does the water and waste. For a straight replacement where everything exists, usually neither.
Where should the power point go?
In the adjoining cupboard, not directly behind the machine — you want to be able to isolate it without pulling the dishwasher out. It's a small detail that matters the first time something leaks.
Can a dishwasher share a circuit with the kitchen outlets?
Usually yes, if that circuit isn't already carrying a lot. Kitchens accumulate load — microwave, kettle, toaster, coffee machine — and adding a dishwasher to an already busy circuit is a common cause of nuisance tripping.
Can I install it myself?
Sliding in a plug-in dishwasher where the outlet, tap and waste already exist is a homeowner job. Creating the outlet is not — that's electrical installation work.
What if there's no cupboard space for the outlet?
There are a few options, including an outlet on the adjacent wall or under the sink with proper clearance from the plumbing. We'll work out something sensible when we see it.
