How much does a switchboard upgrade cost in NSW?
A standard single-phase switchboard upgrade in Sydney costs $1,500–$3,500. Three-phase boards or jobs needing Level 2 service work run $3,500–$6,500. An asbestos-backed meter panel adds $500–$1,500.

What drives the price
Single phase or three phase. Three-phase boards need more switchgear and more work, and they're common on Hills acreage and larger homes. This is the biggest single step in the range.
How many circuits. A 1970s home might have six. A modern home with ducted air, induction, a pool and an EV charger might need eighteen. Every circuit is a breaker and a termination.
Asbestos. Meter panels backed with asbestos sheeting were standard in Sydney until around 1990. It has to be removed by a licensed asbestos removalist, and that's a separate trade with separate costs and disposal requirements. Anyone quoting you a pre-1990 board replacement without mentioning it either hasn't looked, or is planning to raise it once the job has started.
Whether the service mains are adequate. If the cable from the street to your meter is undersized or degraded, that's Level 2 work involving the network operator, and it's a bigger job.
What's found once the board is off. On older homes it's common to find perished insulation on the tails, a marginal main earth, or a MEN connection that isn't right. We price it before doing it.
Do you actually need one?
Not every old board needs replacing. These are the ones that do.
Ceramic rewireable fuses
No RCD protection is possible on this type of board, and no way to add it. If you have these, an upgrade is the only path to modern protection.

- RCBOs on every circuit, not one shared RCD covering the house — so a fault in the kitchen doesn't black out the bedrooms and the alarm
- The main earth and MEN connection verified, which on older installations is where the real problem often turns out to be
- Correct labelling of every circuit
- Spare capacity designed in, so the next addition isn't another board
- Full testing — insulation resistance, earth continuity, loop impedance, RCD trip times
- A Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work, which is a legal requirement in NSW
A cheap quote usually saves money by using a single RCD for everything, skipping the earthing check, and leaving you with no spare ways.

Why are switchboard quotes so different from each other?
Usually because they're not quoting the same job. One includes RCBOs on every circuit, an earthing check and asbestos removal; another is a like-for-like swap with a single shared RCD. Ask what protection arrangement is included and whether asbestos has been allowed for.
Do I legally have to upgrade my switchboard?
No law requires replacing a working board because it's old. But new and altered circuits must have RCD protection, so most significant electrical work on an old board triggers an upgrade in practice.
How long does a switchboard upgrade take?
Most domestic upgrades are a single day, with the power off for the bulk of it. We give you a realistic window beforehand so you can plan around fridges and anyone working from home.
What is Level 2 work and do I need it?
Level 2 covers work on the service mains between the network and your meter — the connection itself rather than your board. You need it if the supply is being upgraded or the connection is faulty. A straight board replacement usually doesn't.
Can I upgrade the switchboard in stages?
Not really. The board is one assembly — you can't half-replace it. What you can stage is the work around it, like adding circuits later, which is exactly why designing in spare capacity matters.
Will an upgrade lower my power bill?
No. A switchboard is protection, not efficiency. Anyone selling an upgrade on the basis of bill savings is selling you something else.
Does the price include the meter?
No. The meter belongs to your retailer or network operator. If it needs changing, that's arranged with them, and we'll tell you if it's likely.
