What actually drives the cost
Distance from switchboard to parking space. This is the biggest variable and it surprises people. Every extra metre of cable adds roughly $30–$50, and on a long run the cable has to be sized for voltage drop rather than just current — which means going up a size or two, at a real cost.
Whether your switchboard has a spare way. Very common problem in 1970s and 80s Hills homes: the board is full, or has no RCD protection, and the upgrade has to happen first. That is often more than the charger install itself, which is why quotes vary so wildly.
Single or three phase. Three phase enables 11kW or 22kW charging, but only if your property actually has three phase and your car's onboard charger can accept it. Many can't, and paying for 22kW you can't use is a common waste.
Whether your supply can take it. A 7kW charger is a substantial continuous load. On a property already running ducted air, a pool and an induction cooktop, load management is often cheaper and faster than upgrading the supply.

How much does it cost to install an EV charger at home in Australia?
The median Australian install is around $2,150 all-in including hardware. In Sydney, a simple single-phase job beside the switchboard starts around $900–$1,300 for installation, with the charger unit typically $900–$1,600 on top.
Why did I get quotes ranging from $900 to $4,000?
Almost always the switchboard. A quote at the bottom of that range assumes a spare way and a short cable run. One at the top includes a board upgrade and a long run to a detached garage. Ask each quote what it assumes about your board.
Do I need three phase power for an EV charger?
No. A 7kW single-phase charger adds roughly 40km of range per hour, which covers overnight charging for nearly everyone. Three phase only helps if you need a large top-up in a short window.
Is a home charger cheaper than public charging?
Substantially, especially charging overnight on an off-peak rate or off your own solar. That's the actual payback case for the install, not the hardware.
Can I just use the cable that came with the car?
It works, but it's slow and it puts a sustained multi-hour load on a general-purpose circuit that probably wasn't designed for it. For regular home charging, a dedicated circuit is the right answer.
Do I need council approval?
Not for a standard domestic charger on your own property. Strata is different — anything involving common property needs owners corporation approval.
Will it work with my solar?
Yes, and it's worth setting up properly. Many chargers can be configured to prioritise excess solar rather than drawing from the grid. Tell us at quoting stage — it affects the install.
