How much does LED downlight installation cost?
Replacing a halogen downlight with an LED costs $60–$110 per light in Sydney. Supplied and installed, budget $50–$100 per standard fitting. A typical whole-home conversion of 8–10 downlights runs $700–$1,000.

Why halogen downlights are worth replacing
Heat. A halogen downlight runs at a temperature that makes contact with ceiling insulation genuinely dangerous. The standard response through the 2000s was to cut the insulation away around every light — which is why so many Hills homes have a ceiling full of holes in their thermal envelope. IC-4 rated LED fittings can have insulation sitting directly on and over them, so the insulation can be reinstated properly.
Running cost. A 50W halogen replaced by a 7W LED at similar output uses roughly a seventh of the power. Across ten lights running four hours a day, that's real money.
Failure rate. Halogen transformers fail steadily as they age, so an older installation is usually a slow drip of individual lights going out.
LED downlight questions
How much do electricians charge to install downlights?
$60–$110 per light for a straight halogen-to-LED replacement into an existing opening. Supplied and installed, standard fittings run $50–$100 each and premium ones $100–$160. A whole-home job of 8–10 lights is typically $700–$1,000.
Is it cheaper to do all the downlights at once?
Yes. Access and setup dominate the cost, so the per-light price drops considerably once we're already in the ceiling. Doing four now and four next year costs meaningfully more than eight today.
Why do my LED downlights flicker when dimmed?
Nearly always an incompatible dimmer. Leading-edge dimmers designed for halogen loads don't suit most LED drivers. A matched trailing-edge dimmer usually resolves it, at $120–$250 per dimmer.
Can insulation touch my downlights?
Only on IC-4 rated fittings, which are designed for it. Older halogen fittings are not, and covering them is a fire risk. This is one of the main reasons to convert.
Will replacing downlights damage my ceiling?
Straight replacements into existing openings normally leave no marks. New positions need a hole cut and a cable run — tidy work, but it is a new hole.
How many downlights do I need in a room?
Fewer than most people install. Over-lighting a room is common and it makes a space feel like an office. We'll talk through spacing and beam angle rather than just filling the ceiling.
What colour temperature should I choose?
Warm white (around 3000K) for living areas and bedrooms, neutral (4000K) for kitchens, bathrooms and laundries. Many modern fittings are switchable, which avoids committing.
