How much does ceiling fan installation cost?
Replacing an existing ceiling fan costs $150–$300 in Sydney. A new fan where a light already exists is $250–$450. A brand new position with a cable run is $350–$600.

What pushes the price up or down
Whether there's already a fan there. This is the single biggest factor and it's binary. Existing fan, same spot: cheap. Anything else: more.
Ceiling access. A single-storey home with a walkable roof space is straightforward. A two-storey with a ground-floor ceiling — no access from above — means working from below and patching, and that's a different job. Raked and cathedral ceilings need extension rods and often scaffolding or a platform.
Whether the mount is rated. A standard ceiling rose is designed to hold a light fitting hanging still. A fan applies continuous vibration and dynamic load. A fan-rated mounting block fixed to a joist is not optional, and it's the step cheap quotes skip.
How you want it switched. Remote-only is cheapest. Wall control for fan and light separately needs an extra conductor, which is trivial while the ceiling is open and expensive afterwards.
How many. Four fans in one visit costs meaningfully less per fan than four separate call-outs, because setup and roof access are the same either way.
What a proper job includes, and what a cheap one skips
- A fan-rated mounting block fixed to structure — not the existing light fixing, and not a plasterboard anchor. This is the difference that shows up two years later as a wobble, or worse.
- Correct blade clearance. Australian requirements set minimum heights from the floor and clearances from walls. Fans mounted too low in a bedroom are a genuine hazard.
- The circuit checked, not assumed. Adding a fan to a lighting circuit that's already loaded with downlights is how nuisance tripping starts.
- Balanced and tested. A fan that wobbles usually isn't faulty — it's unbalanced, and it takes minutes to fix at installation.
- The old fitting removed and made safe, and the ceiling left tidy.

How much does it cost to install a ceiling fan in Sydney?
$150–$300 to replace an existing fan, $250–$450 to put a fan where a light currently is, and $350–$600 for a brand new position needing a cable run. Outdoor rated fans start around $400.
Is it cheaper to install several fans at once?
Yes, meaningfully. Roof access and setup are the same whether we do one fan or four, so the per-fan cost drops a lot after the first. If you're doing bedrooms, do them together.
Does the price include the fan?
The figures above are installation only. Most people buy their own fan; we're happy to supply one if you'd rather not choose.
Why is a new position so much more than a replacement?
Because it's a different job. A replacement reuses existing wiring, switching and mount. A new position needs a cable run from a switch, a new switch position, ceiling access and a fan-rated mount.
Can I install a ceiling fan myself?
No. Connecting a fan to fixed wiring is electrical installation work and must be done by a licensed electrician in NSW. Beyond the legal position, an unrated mount holding a spinning 6kg object above a bed is not where to save $200.
Do DC fans cost more to install?
No — installation is the same. DC fans cost more to buy but use around 60–70% less power and run quieter.
How long does installation take?
About an hour for a straight replacement. Half a day for a new position, depending on roof access.
Do I need a new circuit for a ceiling fan?
Almost never. Fans draw very little. The exception is a lighting circuit already carrying a lot of downlights, which we'd check before adding to it.
