Why acreage properties lose power more often — and for longer

It isn't bad luck or a worse network. It's the physics of long overhead feeders serving few customers, and it changes what backup actually makes sense out here.

Four reasons, all structural

1. The feeder is long and overhead. A suburban street is fed by a short run, often underground in newer estates. An acreage property at the end of a rural feeder can be many kilometres of overhead conductor from the nearest substation. Every kilometre is more exposure to wind, trees, lightning and wildlife.

2. Trees. Rural feeders run through vegetation that a suburban street doesn't have. Branch contact in wind is the single most common cause of outages out here, and it's why utilities spend so much on vegetation management along rural lines.

3. Restoration is prioritised by customer count. This is the one people find hardest to accept, and it's simply how it works. When a storm takes out multiple feeders, crews are directed to restore the greatest number of customers first. A fault affecting 3,000 homes in Castle Hill gets attended before one affecting 40 properties along a road in Glenorie. It's rational allocation, and it means your outage lasts longer.

4. The fault is harder to find. A fault on 400 metres of underground suburban cable is located quickly. A fault somewhere along 12 kilometres of overhead line through bushland has to be patrolled, sometimes on foot, sometimes at night, sometimes in the weather that caused it.

The same conditions cause surge damage

The long overhead feeder that drops out is also an excellent aerial for induced transients. A lightning strike doesn't have to hit your property — or even the line — to put a damaging spike onto it. And every time supply is restored after an outage, there's a switching transient.

So acreage properties experience both more outages and more surge events, at exactly the time when the average rural home contains more sensitive electronics than ever: solar inverters, EV chargers, automation gear, pump controllers, ducted air control boards.

This is why switchboard-mounted surge protection is close to mandatory out here in a way it isn't in a suburban street, and why a point-of-use powerboard behind the TV misses the point entirely — your inverter and your EV charger are hardwired.

No power means no water

The consequence that catches new acreage owners out isn't the fridge. It's the tap.

If your property is on tank or bore water, your water supply depends on an electric pump. No power means no water — no showers, no toilets, no stock water, and no firefighting capability from your own tanks at exactly the time of year when that matters most.

A suburban household treats a two-day outage as an inconvenience with a warm freezer. On acreage, day two without water is a genuine problem. That difference is the whole reason backup power is standard equipment out here rather than a luxury item.

So what should you actually do?

Decide what must keep running. Water pump, fridge and freezer, some lighting, internet, septic pump if you have one. That list — not the size of your house — determines everything else.

Then pick the tool. A battery with backup circuits is silent, automatic and excellent for outages measured in hours. A generator on a changeover switch runs as long as you keep fuel in it, which is what you want on day three. Plenty of properties out here end up with both, and that isn't over-engineering.

Protect what you have. Surge protection at the board costs a few hundred dollars and sits in front of tens of thousands of dollars of equipment.

Common questions

Why does my power go out more than my friends in town?

Long overhead feeders through vegetation, serving few customers. More exposure to faults, and restoration prioritised by the number of customers affected — which puts sparse rural feeders behind dense suburban ones.

Can I get the network to improve my supply?

You can report recurring faults and request vegetation management, and it's worth doing. Wholesale undergrounding of a rural feeder is not something an individual customer can drive. Backup at your end is the practical answer.

How long do rural outages typically last?

Longer than suburban ones, and after a major storm meaningfully longer — a day or more is not unusual. Plan for it rather than being surprised by it.

Battery or generator for acreage?

A battery handles hours automatically and silently. A generator handles days as long as you have fuel. If you're on a pump for water, a generator's ability to run indefinitely is the deciding advantage.

Will a battery run my water pump?

Only if the pump circuit is wired onto the backup side, and only if the battery can handle the pump's starting current. Both need designing in — this is exactly the part left out of package quotes.

Is surge protection really necessary out here?

More than in the suburbs. Long overhead feeders take more induced transients, and modern rural homes contain solar inverters, EV chargers and automation gear that a powerboard can't protect because it's all hardwired.
