Solar battery rebate NSW: what you can actually get
NSW paused its own battery rebate in July 2025. What's available now is the federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount — around $300 per kWh, roughly $3,300 off a 10kWh battery — plus a NSW payment of up to about $1,500 for joining a virtual power plant.
First, the thing most pages get wrong
There is a lot of outdated content online promising a NSW battery rebate. The NSW Government paused its standalone battery installation rebate from 1 July 2025, deliberately, to avoid overlapping with the federal program that started the same day.
So if a page is offering you a NSW state battery rebate on top of everything else, check when it was written. What actually exists as at September 2026 is two things, and they stack.
What's available as at September 2026
Two separate incentives. The federal one is the big one; the NSW one is for joining a VPP.

Rebate programs change, sometimes at short notice. These figures are correct as at September 2026 — confirm current amounts with your installer before committing.
The tiering change from 1 May 2026 — worth understanding
The federal discount is no longer flat across any battery size. Since 1 May 2026 it steps down as the battery gets bigger:
- The first 14kWh attracts 100% of the certificate rate
- 14kWh to 28kWh attracts 60%
- 28kWh to 50kWh attracts just 15%
The practical effect: the sweet spot for a household is at or just under 14kWh. Going from 13kWh to 20kWh does not get you a proportionally bigger rebate, and that changes the sizing maths considerably. If someone is pushing you toward a very large battery, ask them to show you the rebate on each size side by side.
The certificate value also declines over time by design, so the discount is worth more this year than next.
Eligibility — the parts that actually catch people
- The battery must be paired with solar, either existing or installed at the same time. A battery on its own doesn't qualify.
- It must be VPP-ready — capable of joining a virtual power plant, even if you don't join one straight away. This is a capability requirement, not a commitment.
- Installed by an SAA-accredited installer, and on the approved product list.
- Installed after 1 July 2025. Batteries installed before that date don't qualify retrospectively.
- For the NSW VPP payment, you do actually have to connect to a participating VPP — that's what the payment is for.
Where we fit in
Straight answer: we're electricians, not a solar retailer. We don't sell battery packages and we don't process rebate claims — the certificates are applied at point of sale by your accredited installer.
What we do is the electrical work around a battery, which is the part that goes wrong when it's done cheaply:
- Switchboard work — many boards need upgrading before a battery goes in
- Backup circuit design — deciding which circuits stay live in a blackout, and wiring them onto the protected side. This is the part that matters most on acreage and the part most often skipped

Is there a NSW solar battery rebate in 2026?
Not a standalone state rebate — NSW paused that from 1 July 2025. What's available is the federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount of around $300 per kWh, plus a NSW Peak Demand Reduction Scheme payment of up to about $1,500 for connecting your battery to a participating virtual power plant.
How much is the federal battery rebate worth?
Roughly $300 per usable kWh, or about 30% off. On a typical 10kWh battery that's around $3,300. It's delivered as STCs and applied upfront by your installer, so you see it as a lower price rather than claiming it back.
Do I need existing solar to get the battery rebate?
Yes. The battery must be paired with a solar system — existing or installed at the same time. A battery on its own doesn't qualify.
Do I have to join a VPP?
For the federal discount, no — the battery only needs to be VPP-capable. For the NSW Peak Demand Reduction Scheme payment, yes, because that payment is specifically for connecting to one.
What size battery should I get?
Since the May 2026 tiering change, the first 14kWh attracts the full rate and anything above it attracts much less. That makes at or just under 14kWh the efficient point for most households. Size to your actual evening consumption, not to the biggest number you can finance.
Can I add a battery to my existing solar system?
Usually yes. Depending on your inverter you'll either add a battery with its own inverter, or replace the existing one with a hybrid. If your inverter is already 8+ years old, replacing it as part of the battery install often makes sense — it's near end of life anyway.
Will a battery keep my house running in a blackout?
Only if it's installed with backup circuits, and only the circuits you nominate. Many batteries are installed without blackout protection at all, and the owner discovers this during the first outage. If backup matters to you, say so at quoting stage — it changes the wiring.
Is the rebate going to get smaller?
Yes, by design. The certificate value declines over time, and the May 2026 tiering already reduced what larger batteries attract. Waiting costs you money rather than saving it.
