These are indicative market ranges for Sydney in 2026, not a quote. What you pay depends on your switchboard, access and what we find. We confirm a fixed price before starting, and it doesn't move.

What moves the price

Ducted or recirculating. A recirculating hood filters air and blows it back into the room. It's cheaper because there's no duct, and it removes no moisture and no heat. Ducted costs more and is worth it almost every time.

Where the duct has to go. Straight out through an external wall behind the hood is the easy case. Up through cabinetry, across a roof space and out through a cowl is a different job — and in an apartment or an internal kitchen it may not be possible at all.

Whether existing ducting is actually connected. With bathroom fans especially, we regularly find ducting that was never connected to the outside, or has fallen off in the roof. That turns a straight replacement into a duct run, and it's worth knowing rather than repeating the mistake.

Whether the unit needs its own circuit. A plain exhaust fan doesn't. A three-in-one with heat lamps draws real current and usually does.

Common questions

How much does rangehood installation cost?

$200–$450 for a like-for-like replacement on an existing outlet. $400–$900 for a ducted installation running duct through cabinetry and out through the wall or roof.

Is a ducted rangehood worth the extra?

Almost always. Recirculating hoods filter some odour and remove no moisture or heat — which is why kitchens with them get a grease film on the walls. If ducting is physically possible, duct it.

How much does a bathroom exhaust fan cost to install?

$220–$420 to replace an existing fan where the ducting is intact. $400–$750 for a new fan properly ducted to outside. A three-in-one fan, light and heat unit is $450–$900 and often needs its own circuit.

Does a bathroom fan have to vent outside?

It should. Venting into the roof space puts warm moist air into the cavity, which over time means damp insulation, damp timber and mould. It's a common defect in Hills homes.

My fan is noisy but doesn't pull. Why?

Usually a crushed or disconnected duct rather than a failed fan — cheaper to fix than to replace the unit.

Can you install a rangehood in an apartment?

Often only recirculating, because ducting to outside means penetrating common property, which needs owners corporation approval. Worth checking before buying a ducted unit.
