How much does hot water system installation cost?

The electrical side of a hot water replacement is $200–$450 to connect to an existing circuit, or $450–$900 where a new circuit is needed. A heat pump changeover including the tariff and circuit change runs $500–$1,200. The tank and plumbing are separate.

Hot water electrical cost

Sydney, 2026. Electrical only — the unit and plumbing are a separate trade.

The jobPrice
Diagnose a hot water faultElement and thermostat testing, circuit check$180 – $350
Replace a failed element or thermostatWhere the tank itself is sound$250 – $500
Connect a replacement electric storage unitTo an existing suitable circuit$200 – $450
New circuit for a hot water systemWhere none exists or the existing is unsuitable$450 – $900
Heat pump changeover — circuit and tariff changeMoving off controlled load to a daytime circuit$500 – $1,200
Tank and plumbingA plumber's work, for reference$800 – $2,500+

These are indicative market ranges for Sydney in 2026, not a quote. What you pay depends on your switchboard, access and what we find. We confirm a fixed price before starting, and it doesn't move.

What moves the price

Whether it's a fault or a replacement. A failed element on a sound tank is a $250–$500 repair. People frequently replace whole systems that needed an element, because "no hot water" sounds terminal. Diagnose first.

Whether the circuit suits the new unit. Like-for-like electric storage usually reuses the existing circuit. A heat pump often doesn't, because it wants to run during the day rather than overnight.

The controlled-load question. Traditional electric storage sits on an off-peak controlled load circuit that only energises overnight, at a cheaper rate. That's a good arrangement for storage and usually the wrong one for a heat pump — especially if you have solar and would rather heat water with your own generation than export it. Changing it involves your retailer as well as wiring.

Is a heat pump worth it?

On running cost, for most households, yes — a heat pump uses roughly a third of the energy of resistive electric storage for the same hot water, and there are rebates that improve the sums further.

The case gets much stronger if you have solar. A heat pump running in the middle of the day is effectively storing your excess generation as hot water, which beats exporting it at current feed-in rates. That's the reason the circuit and tariff change matters — leaving a heat pump on an overnight controlled-load tariff while you export solar all day is a genuinely common and expensive mistake.

The honest counterpoints: heat pumps have a compressor and a fan, so they make noise and need airflow, which matters if the unit sits outside a bedroom window. And they're more complex than a tank with an element in it, so there's more to go wrong over fifteen years.

Hot water cost questions

How much does it cost to install a hot water system?

The electrical side is $200–$450 to connect a replacement to an existing circuit, or $450–$900 if a new circuit is needed. A heat pump changeover including the tariff change is $500–$1,200. The tank and plumbing typically add $800–$2,500 or more.

Is it cheaper to repair than replace?

Often, yes. A failed element or thermostat on a sound tank is $250–$500 against several thousand for a full replacement. Diagnose before deciding — "no hot water" is very often an element.

How long does a hot water system last?

Electric storage tanks typically last 8–12 years, sometimes longer with a well-maintained sacrificial anode. Elements and thermostats fail sooner and individually, which is why repair is frequently the right call.

What's a controlled load circuit?

A separately metered circuit that only energises during off-peak periods at a cheaper rate. Traditional electric storage heats overnight on it. It suits storage and usually doesn't suit a heat pump.

Can I run a heat pump on solar?

That's the best case for one — running it during the day stores your excess generation as hot water instead of exporting it. It needs the circuit and tariff arranged for daytime operation, which is exactly the change people miss.

Do I need a plumber as well?

For a tank replacement, yes. We do the circuit, isolation and connection; a plumber does the tank, water connections, tempering valve and relief valve. We're happy to coordinate.
