What we actually see in Arcadia

Arcadia is bushland acreage — large holdings, heavy tree cover, and properties where the driveway alone can be a couple of hundred metres. It shares Glenorie's rural profile with even more vegetation, and that combination produces the two things Arcadia owners call us about most: outages and long runs.

The tree cover is the defining factor. It's the amenity people move here for, and it's also why the feeders come down. Branch contact in wind is the single biggest cause of supply interruption on rural lines, and Arcadia has as much of it as anywhere in the Hills.

The distances make every distribution decision consequential. A shed 150 metres from the house is ordinary here, and at that range cable sizing is driven entirely by voltage drop — the difference between doing it right and doing it cheaply can be several cable sizes and thousands of dollars, and it's invisible until something with a motor gets plugged in.

Bushfire exposure is real, water is on tanks, and mobile and internet coverage can be marginal in the more sheltered pockets — which makes wired solutions for gates, intercoms and cameras more reliable than the wireless kit that gets sold for them.

Arcadia questions

Why does the power go out so much in Arcadia?

Trees. Branch contact with overhead rural feeders in wind is the single most common cause of outages, and Arcadia has more tree cover than almost anywhere else we work. It's the trade-off for the bushland setting.

My shed is 150 metres from the house. What does that mean?

That cable sizing is driven entirely by voltage drop rather than current. At that distance you may be looking at 25mm² or larger for a load that would need 6mm² over 40 metres. It's the whole reason quotes for these jobs vary so much — ask what cable size each has allowed.

Will a wireless camera or intercom work at my gate?

Often not reliably. Distance, tree cover and terrain all degrade wireless, and Arcadia has all three. If you're trenching for gate power anyway, running cable in the same trench is far more dependable.

Our internet is marginal. Can you help?

We can cable properly within the property — access points positioned to actually cover the house, and a wired link to a studio or shed rather than hoping Wi-Fi reaches. What arrives at the boundary is your provider's side of it.

Is backup power standard out here?

Close to it. With tank water and outages that can run to multiple days, most established Arcadia properties end up with either a generator on a changeover switch or a battery with backup circuits, and often both.
